Krista grew up in New England, where childhood visits to places like Mystic, Plymouth and Salem sparked a lifelong interest in history.

Her first novel, Chasing the Nightbird, transports readers back to mid-nineteenth century New Bedford, Massachusetts, where the winds of change blow fierce.
Lucky Valera, a young whaleman of Cape Verdean ancestry, has been forced to “swallow the anchor” and live amongst the landlubbers. While plotting his escape back to a life at sea, Lucky becomes involved in the abolitionists movement and the Underground Railroad and faces difficult choices that could cost him everything.
